Biography:  Mr. Epstein has been a partner with the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson LLP since 1999.  He previously practiced with Jenner & Block LLP from 1983-1999 and Leva, Hawes, Symington, Martin & Oppenheimer from 1981-1983.  Before entering private practice, Mr. Epstein served in the US Department of Justice from 1978-1981 as an attorney in the Antitrust Division, as Special Assistant to Deputy Attorney General Charles B. Renfrew, and as a prosecutor in the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.  

Immediately after graduation from law school in 1977, he clerked for Charles B. Renfrew, United States District Judge for the Northern District of California.  In private practice, Mr. Epstein handled a wide range of civil and criminal litigation in state and federal courts around the country and before federal agencies in Washington.  His clients ranged from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses to local governments to non-profit organizations to individuals.  He also advised clients concerning antitrust and telecommunications issues.  

Throughout his career in private practice, he made a substantial commitment to pro bono work, including serving as a volunteer in the Family Court’s Self-Help Center.  Mr. Epstein served for a decade on the DC Court of Appeals’ Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law, including the last eight years as chair.  He has been involved in a variety of DC Bar activities.  He was Vice Chair of the DC Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee when it recommended a comprehensive revision of the DC Rules of Professional Conduct that the Court of Appeals adopted effective in 2007.  He also served on the DC Bar Multi-jurisdictional Practice Committee and on both the Steering Committee and the Court Rules Committee of the DC Bar Section on Courts, Lawyers, and the Administration of Justice.

Mr. Epstein received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1977 and his undergraduate degree from Yale College in 1974.

Mr. Epstein is married to Karen K. Epstein and the father of Katherine C. and Claire H. Epstein.
