JOINT DC COURTS/DC BAR CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON THE D.C. LEGAL SYSTEM’S ABILITY TO RESPOND TO EMERGENCIES

The DC Courts and the DC Bar will hold their biennial joint conference next Thursday and Friday, March 30 and 31, 2006. Judges of the DC Court of Appeals and Superior Court and members of the DC Bar will meet with attorneys and community members to assess the local legal system’s emergency preparedness.   WHAT: DC Courts-DC Bar Biennial Conference   Topic:  “State of Emergency:  Is the District’s Justice System Prepared?”

WHO:  Chief Judge Eric T. Washington, DC Court of Appeals; Chief Judge Rufus G. King, III, Superior Court of DC; DC Bar President John Cruden; Senator Mary Landrieu (D-La); US Attorney Kenneth Wainstein; City Administrator Robert Bobb; DC Attorney General Robert Spagnoletti 
 
The conference will feature reports on the State of the Judiciary and the State of the Bar (1:45pm Thursday); a “Lessons’ Learned from other Jurisdictions” panel discussion involving representatives from Louisiana, Florida and New York and moderated by local news anchor Maureen Bunyon (2:45pm Thursday); a panel entitled “Disaster and Recovery - Is the District Prepared?” with City Administrator Robert Bobb, US Attorney Kenneth Wainstein and DC Attorney General Robert Spagnoletti (9:30am Friday) and a noon luncheon address on Friday by US Senator Mary Landrieu.  Friday afternoon highlights include ten seminars and one forum program on a range of topics including jury deliberations, arbitration, the Superior Court’s Domestic Violence Unit After 10 Years, recent developments in Poverty Law, the DC Access to Justice Commission, and several others. (2:15-4:45pm Friday)
