The Process

  • Application is submitted with supporting documentation.
  • Within 3-5 business days the application is reviewed, verified, and then the application is accepted or denied based on the information received.
  • Claimant is notified of the decision by email or U.S. mail.
  • If your claim is accepted, a claims examiner is assigned to your claim and has 7-10 days to review your claim before they contact you.
  • A claims examiner will contact you to discuss compensation you may be eligible to receive and request additional documentation, if needed.
  • After all documentation is received, a request for payment is submitted to the Accounting Officer for approval and Budget & Finance division for issuance of payment. This process can take 2-4 weeks.

Review Process

Completed applications are reviewed by claims examiners. Claims examiners make determinations on whether to approve or deny an application. The claimant is notified by mail or email of the determination and informed of the appeal process. If there is new or previously unavailable information, the claimant may file a Request for Reconsideration within 30 days of the initial determination. If the applicant disagrees with the determination but does not have new or previously unavailable information, they can appeal the initial decision within 30 days. The Appeals Board reviews the application and all supporting documents in the file. The Appeals Board may hold a hearing when necessary. A final determination by the Board may be appealed to the Chief Judge of the Court.

If your application is denied or compensation requested is denied:

  • Request for Reconsideration. If there is new or previously unavailable information, the claimant may file a Request for Reconsideration within 30 days of the initial determination. All Requests for Reconsideration may be filed in the Crime Victims Compensation Program office or submitted to CVCPOffice [at] dcsc.gov.
