Who is Eligible to Get a Domestic Violence Protection Order?

  • You may seek a protection order if the other person is a family member, roommate, someone with whom you had a dating relationship or a child in common, are or were married to, or if they previously dated your current or former boyfriend or girlfriend.
  • You may also file if you are the victim of stalking, sexual assault, or sexual abuse.
  • To get a Civil Protection Order, you must prove to the judge that the other person committed or threatened to commit a crime against you.

If the Judge Issues a Temporary Protection Order Against You:

You should obey all of the terms of that eOrder. Remember that the order restricts your behavior not the other person’s behavior, so it is up to you to make sure that you comply with the eOrder (for example, if the judge orders you to stay away, you have to make sure you are not near them, they do not have to change their behavior so that they are not near you).

If you want to file an answer and respond to the charges made in the request for the order, you should go to the Domestic Violence Clerk’s Office, in room 4510 of the Moultrie Courthouse, at 500 Indiana Avenue, NW, Washington DC or the Greater Southeast Intake Center, at 1328 Southern Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20032 to file a response.
