WHO:  DC Courts and DC Bar sections host several hundred DC-area teens

WHAT: Sixth Annual Youth Law Fair   “Risky Business: Reckless Driving”

WHERE: Moultrie Courthouse 500 Indiana Avenue, NW

WHEN: Saturday, March 19th – 10am to 4pm

The DC Courts and the DC Bar will sponsor the 6th Annual Youth Law Fair this Saturday at the Moultrie Courthouse.   Hundreds of students from DC area high schools will participate in mock trials, roleplaying as judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, civil litigators and jurors.  Local judges and members of the bar will assist them in these roles, providing a learning experience about the law and the criminal justice system.   The criminal and civil mock trials will involve a fact pattern in which teens are charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle (“UUV”), reckless driving, DUI and vehicular manslaughter.  Other events during the day include courthouse tours and career and education exhibits for the students.  Two “Youth Speak Outs,” open forums for discussion among the teens on car thefts, drag racing and other related juvenile crimes, will be held at 10 am and 3 pm.

The goal of Youth Law Fair is to work with students to promote a dialogue on current legal issues, enhance their knowledge of the judicial system and educate area teens about legal careers.  This annual community outreach event has reached nearly 1,200 area youth since its inception in 2000.  All area high school students are welcome.  For more information, see www.dcbar.org/youthlawfair.
