Bio

Renee Raymond was appointed magistrate judge by Chief Judge Lee Satterfield in December 2013.

Magistrate Judge Renee Raymond is a native of South Central Los Angeles and attended Los Angeles High School. She graduated cum laude from Yale College where she received her B.A. in English Literature. Judge Raymond received her J.D. at New York University Law School where she was the recipient of the Greene Award for Preeminent Achievement in the Art of Advocacy.

Judge Raymond was with the DC Public Defender Service (PDS) for over 20 years. For more than fifteen years she represented adults charged with homicides and the most serious sex cases. Judge Raymond was Training Director at PDS from 2006 through early 2010, developing, organizing, and implementing an eight-week training program for new PDS attorneys. She also developed, organized, and conducted with the Deputy Director of PDS an intensive training program for the purpose of starting indigent criminal defense organizations in different provinces in China with eight attorneys from China.

Judge Raymond is a regular guest faculty member of Harvard Law School's Trial Advocacy Workshop. While at PDS she was a guest faculty member or lecturer for numerous organizations around the country on many aspects of criminal law and trial advocacy. She was also a regular presenter or panelist at PDS Criminal Practice Institute Conferences and Summer Series. In addition, Judge Raymond has been a guest lecturer or panelist at several area law schools on a range of topics designed to educate law students and inspire them to consider a career in public service.

Judge Raymond is an adjunct professor at Washington College of Law.
