Overview
The DC Courts want to make sure that everyone who comes to court is safe. The United States Marshals Service and Court Security Officers (CSOs) help protect the building and the people inside.
What to Expect When You Enter the Courthouse
Everyone must go through security when they come into the courthouse. You will need to:
- Empty your pockets and place items in a tray to go through the X-ray machine.
- Take off your coat and place it on the X-ray machine belt. Leave items in your coat pockets.
- Put your purse, backpack, or other bags on the X-ray machine.
- Walk through a metal detector.
If the metal detector or X-ray machine beeps, a security officer may scan you again with a handheld wand or check your belongings to see what caused the alert.
Do Not Bring Dangerous Items
Weapons, pocketknives (like Swiss Army knives), scissors, silverware, lighters, and anything that could hurt someone are not allowed in the courthouse. These items will be taken away and not returned. If you're not sure whether something is okay to bring, it's best to leave it at home.
Before you leave the security area, make sure to grab all your things.
Rules for Using the Courthouse
The courthouse is a place where people come to solve legal problems, go to hearings, and get help with court services. To keep the space safe and respectful, there are some important rules everyone must follow.
The DC Courts' Building Use Policy outlines key principles to ensure safety, respect, and proper use of court facilities. Here are the main points:
- Who Can Enter. Access to court buildings is limited to individuals with official business. Visitors may be required to present identification and pass through security screening.
- Preserve Court Property. Damaging or defacing court property is prohibited. This includes writing on walls, damaging furniture, or any other form of vandalism.
- Follow Official Signs and Directions. All individuals must adhere to posted signs and follow instructions from court personnel. This ensures order and safety within the facilities.
- Prohibited Items. Weapons, explosives, and other dangerous items are not allowed in court buildings. Bringing such items can lead to legal consequences.
- Conduct. Disruptive behavior, including loud talking, inappropriate language, or any actions that interfere with court proceedings, is not permitted.
- Photography and Recording. Taking photos or recording (Facetime, live-streaming, or any audio recordings) inside court buildings is generally prohibited unless authorized. This protects the privacy and integrity of court processes.
