Capital Projects and Facilities Management

The DC Courts occupy five buildings in historic Judiciary Square with some satellite offices in other locations in the District. One of the original green spaces identified in Pierre L'Enfant's plan for the Nation's Capital, Judiciary Square, is now at the center of a vital and rapidly developing area of the city. At the request of the National Capital Planning Commission, the DC Courts prepared an urban design plan, the Judiciary Square Master Plan, to coordinate the Square's renewal and preservation. The Judiciary Square Master Plan creates a campus-like setting for court business and an urban oasis for the public. It calls for the return of Judiciary Square to a green, park-like environment that is safe and secure for the community to enjoy. 

The District of Columbia Courts' Facilities Master Plan was initially developed in 2002 and updated in May 2006 and May 2019. The Plan calls for the refurbishment of all DC Courts facilities including the renovation of the Historic Courthouse, the centerpiece of Judiciary Square, as the home of the DC Court of Appeals, the further consolidation of Family Court space within the Moultrie Courthouse, and the realignment of functions within the Courts’ facilities to make operations more efficient and accessible. The refurbishment includes the interior renovation and exterior restoration of all DC Courts buildings, as well as infrastructure and mechanical upgrades.
