Bio

The Honorable Lloyd U. Nolan, Jr. was appointed as a magistrate judge by Chief Judge Lee Satterfield in 2010.

Judge Nolan is currently serving as the Presiding Magistrate Judge. Judge Nolan was born and raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Judge Nolan received his B.A. degree from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts 1988. After graduation, he worked in sales and marketing at the Nabisco and Kraft General Foods companies.

In 1998, Judge Nolan received his Juris Doctorate from the George Washington University School of Law. After law school, Judge Nolan served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Russell F. Canan of the D.C. Superior Court. Judge Nolan then joined the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where he spent 11 years doing trial work at all levels, from juvenile matters to the most serious adult felony cases. During his tenure at the Public Defender Service, Judge Nolan also worked in the appellate division.

Since joining the bench as a Magistrate Judge in 2010, Judge Nolan has served in every court division except probate. As the presiding magistrate judge, he has direct responsibility for the magistrate judges, as well as a neglect and abuse calendars. In addition, Judge Nolan provides coverage when needed in all divisions of the Courthouse and serves on multiple committees within the Courthouse.
