The Honorable Gregory Mize

Judge Mize currently devotes most of his profession energy to serve as a judicial fellow at the National Center for State Courts (NCSC). In that capacity, he works with NCSC’s Center for Jury Studies’ team to help state courts around the country improve their jury trial systems. He also leads a number of special projects for the Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ). These include serving as the Reporter to the CCJ Committee on Civil Justice Improvements and as principal staff to the Working Group on Foreign Lawyers & the International Practice of Law. He is the CCJ’s principal monitor of U.S. Congress proposals that implicate federalism principles.

Beginning in 2009 he served as a judicial ethics and codification expert in the USAID Project to Strengthen the Independence of the Judiciary and Citizen Access to Justice in Lebanon. He was a consultant to a US Justice Department project supporting efforts by the Republic of Georgia to implement jury trials within the Georgian criminal justice system.

In 2014 Judge Mize assisted NCSC’s Judicial Reform and Government Accountability Project in Belgrade Serbia. He developed and delivered a training program to help Serbian judges draft clear, concise and accurate written opinions and judgments. He also coached Serbian Judicial Academy trainers in order to promote good writing disciplines by future generations of judicial candidates. In 2015–2016, he led teams of American jurists to deliver similar programs to judges in Jamaica and several Eastern Caribbean islands.

President George H.W. Bush appointed Judge Mize to the trial bench in 1990. In that capacity, he presided over hundreds of civil and criminal jury trials in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. In 2002 he assumed senior judge status and founded MizeADR (www.MizeADR.com) providing arbitration and mediation services in a cost-effective manner.

He is an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center and a Special Advisor to the BIC International Trade in Legal Services Committee of the International Bar Association.

Before joining the trial bench, Judge Mize was a trial lawyer and then General Counsel to the District of Columbia City Council.
