The Honorable Philip A. Medley
Bio
The Honorable Philip A. Medley was appointed a magistrate judge by Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring in May 2022.
Before his appointment, Judge Medley was an assistant attorney general at the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia. He served in the Civil Litigation Division, representing the District of Columbia and its employees in general civil litigation matters, including employment law, civil rights claims, and common law torts.
Previously, Judge Medley served in the Child Support Services Division of the Office of the Attorney General, representing the District on behalf of children in need of paternity establishment and financial support. He specialized in paternity and support cases that were litigated alongside related custody, domestic violence, and neglect cases.
Judge Medley clerked for the Honorable Melvin R. Wright. He received his Juris Doctor degree from The George Washington University Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the College of William & Mary.
Judge Medley has served as a member, co-chair, and vice chair of the Steering Committee for the Family Law Community of the D.C. Bar. He also served on the Civil Jury Instructions Committee. Judge Medley has served as a mentor in the community through both the Thurgood Marshall Academy Mentor Program and the Everybody Wins DC Shared Reading Program.
He resides in the District with his wife and their son.
