Bio

Adriane R. Marblestein-Deare was appointed by Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring on August 15, 2022.

Judge Marblestein-Deare was born in British Guyana in South America, grew-up in Canada and has resided in Maryland and the District of Columbia. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction in Canada and graduated from Howard University School of Law cum laude. She is licensed to practice law in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Judge Marblestein-Deare worked in community and human services administration in Toronto, Canada, as well as a program manager and adjudicator within the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission. She successfully completed and graduated from the rigorous Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Training Depot in Saskatchewan, Canada. Judge Marblestein-Deare was the second Black female officer in the 100-plus year history of the RCMP. She was stationed in eastern Canada endowed with federal law enforcement powers and authority throughout Canada.

Upon graduating law school, Judge Marblestein-Deare was awarded the Covington & Burling Public Interest Fellowship working in southeast Washington, D.C. at Neighborhood Legal Services Program. As a staff attorney, she represented low-income and indigent D.C. residents in family, civil and landlord & tenant matters. Judge Marblestein-Deare was subsequently engaged to work in the Washington, D.C. Executive Office of the Mayor representing executive agencies in labor-management matters. Judge Marblestein-Deare then went into private practice handling family law, education, juvenile delinquency and probate matters, including successfully arguing before the D.C. Court of Appeals.

Over the years, she served on various committees, conducted training and has been an invited speaker within the Washington, D.C. legal community, including bar associations, Georgetown University School of Law, and Howard University School of Law. Judge Marblestein-Deare has also served as co-chairperson of the Neglect and Delinquency Practice Institute (NDPI). In 2019, she was awarded the Family Court Trial Lawyers’ Association (FCTLA) Lifetime Achievement Award.
