Mediation and Arbitration Experience
I have conducted over 500 mediations and over 25 arbitrations since retiring in 2003.
- Mediations – My basic training was in transformative mediation, which I have used in employment, landlord-tenant, probate, and minor criminal cases. I have extensive practice in facilitative and evaluative mediation, which I have used in tort, contract, medical malpractice, and administrative law cases.
- Arbitrations – My arbitrations have been almost exclusively for FINRA, where I have been selected as panel chair or sole arbitrator in almost all my cases. As my son now works for a private equity firm, I am no longer an eligible FINRA neutral.
Professional Background
I held various legal and administrative positions in the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Public Counsel Section, Antitrust Division, Department of Justice from 1973 to 1979. I worked from 1979 to 1986 as Assistant General Counsel at Satellite Business Systems, a satellite communications joint venture of IBM, Aetna, and Comsat.
From 1986 to my retirement at the end of 2003, I worked, primarily as General Counsel, for Hughes Network Systems, Inc., a worldwide developer and supplier of telecommunications products and services with approximately 5,000 employees and annual revenues of approximately $1.3 billion.
