Bio

An attorney specializing in business transactions for over thirty years, Mr. Butler has extensive experience representing sophisticated clients in complex matters that often are the subject of appellate mediation proceedings. These areas include business sales, real estate, commercial finance, partnerships, general contracts, technology, employment, construction, sports and entertainment, and aviation matters. Mr. Butler has received a “preeminent” peer rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

Mr. Butler has been selected to serve on the following mediation rosters:

  • Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Maryland
  • Maryland Association of Realtors “Buyer Seller” Mediation Program
  • Circuit Court of Howard County, Maryland
  • District Court of Maryland’s “Day of Trial” Program—Large Claims Docket
  • District of Columbia’s Foreclosure Mediation Program

Mr. Butler also has been selected to serve as a chairperson and arbitrator for FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) in the following areas:

  • Employment Matters — Breach of contract, compensation, commissions, partnerships, promissory notes, discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, sexual harassment, and recruitment disputes.
  • Account Matters — Breach of contract, dividends, margin calls, and transfer.
  • Securities Matters — Certificates of deposit, corporate bonds, limited partnerships, municipal bonds, private equities, preferred stock, repurchase agreements, REITs, warrants/rights, and underwriting.

Mr. Butler established the Law Offices of James D. Butler in 1992. Before launching his solo legal practice, Mr. Butler was an associate attorney for six years with the international law firm of Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C., and served as a law clerk for Bernard M. Decker, Senior Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago).

A cum laude graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Mr. Butler also holds a Master of Science degree in Government from the London School of Economics (awarded with highest distinction) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College (awarded summa cum laude). He was a semifinalist for both the Rhodes Scholarship and the Truman Congressional Scholarship. Mr. Butler is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
