Bio

William H. White Jr. is a Senior Partner based in the Washington, D.C. office of Kiernan Trebach LLP, with over 25 years of experience managing and handling complex insurance coverage actions, appeals in state and federal courts, and multi-party/class action cases in numerous jurisdictions. Mr. White is experienced in insurance, contract, and other commercial matters, as well as in personal injury, professional errors and omissions, and professional malpractice disputes. He devotes a significant portion of his practice to counseling and representing insurers in coverage disputes. He has defended claims ranging from attorney malpractice and professional errors and omissions to construction defects, environmental exposures and contamination, and general negligence. Mr. White is also experienced in defending mass tort cases and class actions.

Mr. White has been recognized as a Top-Rated Lawyer in Washington, D.C. by Lexis Nexis Martindale-Hubbell. He was named a “Top 50 Attorney for DC” in 2023 by Attorney Intel. He serves as a court-appointed mediator for the Circuit Mediation Program of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He also mediates cases privately for parties. Mr. White is fluent in Spanish and often assists in communicating with both factual and expert witnesses with respect to their involvement in the case.

Notable Matters:

Mr. White has represented an excess insurer in a large-scale bankruptcy involving thousands of abuse claims asserted against the policyholder. He represented a primary insurer of a developer in a mixed-use development involving substantial environmental remediation. He has defended a hotelier from personal injury claims at overseas hotels, represented an excess DCIP insurer in a catastrophic personal injury matter, and represented an excess CCIP insurer in a significant construction defects matter. Mr. White defended a general liability insurer against a challenge to a limited coverage extension endorsement in a sexual abuse case, defended a large transit agency in a mass tort event, and handled class actions related to alleged debt collection statutory violations and products liability. Additionally, he defended a petroproducts company against a claim by the Maryland Department of the Environment resulting from a release of petroleum products.
