The event will be held on the John Marshall level of the Moultrie Courthouse, just off John Marshall Plaza. The statues being dedicated were created by local artist, Antonio Tobias Mendez, who will be at the event along with his models. The statues were commissioned by the District of Columbia Courts as part of their Facilities Master Plan and the development of the new Family Court. The statues embody the vision of the Family Court to uplift and strengthen families throughout our community. Mr. Mendez is well-known for his bronze castings. Locally, his art work can be found at the Thurgood Marshall Memorial in front of the Maryland State House and at the US Naval Memorial in Washington, DC
The new Family Court entrance marks the completion of the second phase in the development of the Family Court’s facilities. Designed by Gruzen Samton Architects, Planners and Interior Designers, the expansion provides a separate and distinct Family Court entrance and enhances security and ADA access. In 2004, the first phase of the Family Court renovation consolidated all of the public functions in one location. It included the construction of new, family-friendly courtrooms and hearing rooms, a Centralized Intake Center, a Self-Help Center for unrepresented parties, and family waiting areas. Future phases will consolidate administrative functions and juvenile probation offices.
