Michael Hughes to be Sworn in as U.S. Marshal for D.C. Courts

Michael Hughes was nominated for the position of Marshal for the DC Courts by President Barack Obama on September 22, 2011. “I am pleased to nominate this outstanding public servant to serve as a US marshal,” said President Obama. “Throughout his career, Michael has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to justice. I am grateful for his continued willingness to serve and protect the American people.” 
During a Senate subcommittee hearing in November, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton said, “Mr. Hughes has the combination of field and management experience and the calm and diplomatic temperament needed to improve recruitment and retention in the office.” Hughes’ nomination was confirmed by the US Senate on November 18, and his commission signed by the President on November 29, 2011. 
Hughes has spent his entire law enforcement career with the US Marshals Service. He began his tenure in 1991 and has served in a vast array of assignments including court security, fugitive investigations, asset forfeiture, protective operations, human resources, tactical operations and on various multi-agency task forces. Hughes served as the acting deputy assistant director for the Human Resources Division as well as the chief of the Office of      
     
Recruitment, where he was responsible for the development, implementation and enhancement of all recruitment and retention efforts for both operational and administrative personnel. Hughes served as the first supervisory inspector with the Witness Security Division assigned to the protection detail of the deputy attorney general. Hughes most recently served as the chief of the Office of Crisis Services within the US Marshal Service’s Tactical Operations Division. He was responsible for providing crisis intervention, personal assistance and highly skilled support to Marshals Service employees. Hughes was also responsible for managing the Peer Support Program, the Critical incident Response Team and the Employee Assistance Program for the US Marshals Service. From 2003 to 2004, Hughes was detailed by the US Marshals Service to the Washington, DC office of Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ).  
Hughes’ academic credentials include a Master’s degree in Public Administration from American University, a Legislative Fellowship from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and criminal justice from Montclair State University, New Jersey.  
Marshal Hughes currently resides in Washington, D.C.
