To honor families who have been successfully reunited with their children, the DC Superior Court’s Family Court and the DC Child and Family Services Agency will host a Family Celebration Day.

Elected officials, community-based organizations, as well as local providers of services to children and families, will be on hand to help the families celebrate their accomplishments. Casey Family Programs, a national foundation helping children and families, assisted with this initiative, as well as the American Bar Association which is supporting Family Reunification celebrations across the country.

Michael Smith, retired NBA power forward and former member of the Washington Wizards, will be playing basketball with children participating in the day’s events as well.

Last year, over 220 District of Columbia children were reunified with their parents or guardians after being temporarily placed in foster homes or with relatives.  These parents worked hard to get their lives in order and make sure they could take care of their children.  The children are now back with their families and no longer in foster care. It is these reunified families and their achievements that we will honor on June 4.
