The Art of Justice: Disrupting the Child Welfare, Juvenile Delinquency to Adult Prison Pipeline.

This session will explore how systems often pass traumatized children from one system to the next without offering them the capacity to heal from the trauma narratives and equip them with skills necessary to make transformation change. Judge Mitchell will discuss the reforms he and others have implemented to replace the pipeline and offer a canvas of artistic court expression which leads to wholeness and healing.

Enhancing Collaboration to Improve How Systems Address the Needs of Dual-System Youth

Dual-System and crossover are terms used to describe young people who are dually involved in the child welfare and juvenile legal systems. These youth are under-identified as such and face disparate outcomes compared to their single system involved peers even when there is knowledge of involvement in a second system. This session will focus on educating audience members on this vulnerable population and the common barriers facing juvenile legal and child welfare staff in their efforts to support these youth. The presenters, who have worked in over 100 communities nationwide, will explore those challenges and how they can be addressed through the Crossover Youth Practice Model. The session will also include the experience of a neighboring community (to DC) in their implementation and sustaining of the Model and its impact on front-line staff, youth, and families.
