The session will help legal and non-legal advocates learn more about the identification, prevention, and remediation of bullying behavior in schools, communities, and cyberspace.  Attendees will gain knowledge about the scope of bullying-type behavior, strategies for identifying signs that may indicate that a youth is either bullying another youth or being bullied, a review of effective prevention strategies, and legal remedies to address bullying on an individual and systemic level.

Issues Facing Transgender Youth and Parents in Custody Cases

This panel will address some of the issues arising in divorce and custody cases involving transgender youth and their families, including discussing ways that parents, advocates, and the court can become involved in joining children in being open about sexual orientation or gender identity.  The panel will include a sitting Domestic Relations Judge, a prominent domestic relations attorney, and a clinical expert who will all speak to navigating this emerging issue.

At this panel, representatives from the Mayor’s Office, the District of Columbia Public Schools, Child and Family Services Administration, and the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services will provide an overview of the services and programs the city already provides and their plans for the future. Come to learn about these programs and discuss future directions for the city’s services and how attorneys, judges, and advocates can most effectively interact with the city in helping LGBTQ youth access and benefit from these services.
