Community Information and Referral Program
The Community Information and Referral Program has trained Dispute Resolution Specialists (DRSs) to assist residents of the District of Columbia in finding the best way to resolve their disputes before filing a petition with the D.C. Superior Court.
DRSs interview parties to determine the type of conflict or dispute they are involved in, and then actively provide clients with options, including referrals, telephone conciliation and pre-filing mediation, to help them resolve their dispute. Some issues that typically come up during the interview process involve debt collection, landlord-tenant disputes, consumer complaints and family relations.
DRSs also perform intake interviews with parties referred to the Family Mediation Program by the Family Court to ensure the cases are appropriate for mediation. This requires DRSs to have a solid understanding of domestic violence issues and how domestic violence may negatively impact the mediation process.
This work is as challenging as it is rewarding. It is an opportunity to have a direct impact in people's lives. Dispute Resolution Specialists are required to work no less than two consecutive days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., depending on the program needs.
These positions are compensated at an hourly rate of $17.50 (with a potential of $20.00 per hour) through a program stipend. Benefits are not offered and specialists cannot be compensated for their lunch hour.
