Family Celebration Day
To honor families who have been successfully reunited with their children, the DC Superior Court’s Family Court and the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency hosted their first Family Celebration Day on June 4, 2011. Family Court judges, elected officials, community-based organizations, and local service providers were on hand to help the families celebrate their accomplishments. Michael Smith, retired NBA power forward and former member of the Washington Wizards, conducted a basketball clinic for the children in attendance.
In 2010, over 200 D.C. children were reunified with their parents or guardians after being temporarily placed in foster homes or with relatives. These parents worked hard to get their lives in order and make sure they could take care of their children. The children are now back with their families and no longer in foster care. It is these reunified families and their achievements that were honored at Family Celebration Day.
